Overview
Intermediate Baseball in Little League—also known as the 50/70 Division—is a transitional division between the standard Little League Majors (46/60) field and the larger Junior/Senior League fields (60/90). It’s designed for players typically ages 11–13 who are ready for a bigger field and more advanced rules but may not be ready for the full-size diamond yet.
Beyond field dimensions, players enjoy an expansion of game rules, nudging them closer to the guidelines and excitement of MLB play. Base-runners can now take leads off the bag and their counterparts on the mound and at the plate can pick them off. Pitch count allowances increase to 95 pitches per day.
Season
Player evaluations, if held, are typically conducted in late February or early March. Practices typically begin around the end of March. Games typically start in early to mid April and go until early to mid June.
Field Dimensions
Pitching distance: 50 feet (vs. 46 ft in Majors)
Base paths: 70 feet (vs. 60 ft in Majors)
Outfield fences: Often 200–225 ft
Game Duration
Games are played for the full 7 innings (or until a mercy rule applies: 10-run lead after 5 innings)
You can expect a 1 hr 45 min–2 hr cap as a local time limit
Rules Expansion
Leading off and stealing: Unlike Majors, players can lead off bases and steal at any time, just like in full baseball.
Pickoffs allowed: Pitchers can attempt pickoffs, adding complexity to the game.
Dropped third strike: In effect, advancing base runners if the catcher doesn’t catch strike three.
Balks enforced: Pitchers must adhere to full balk rules.
