In the coming weeks, Berwyn Paoli Area Little League will be launching a Junior Sports Journalism Academy. It promises to be a lot of fun. The following is a summary of what we have in mind. Stay tuned.
Objectives | to provide our Little Leaguers, siblings, & families with…
- An introduction to the fundamentals of sports journalism (research, interviewing, narrative development, writing/editing, photography).
- Engaging, informative and inspiring content on a regular basis through our new website.
- Opportunities to engage and/or meet inspirational figures within the Little League and broader baseball and softball communities.
Feature Articles
- Q&A features with persons of interest.
- Full biographical features on aforementioned.
- Pieces on Little League history, BPALL history, baseball/softball subjects of interest, community topics.
- Coverage of significant BPALL league and district games.
Approach
- Appoint 3-6 Little Leaguers (boys, girls) of various ages to Team.
- Assign research responsibilities; adult family members to assist.
- Team meeting. Discuss research findings, prepare for interview, subdivide interview questions.
- Interview subject as a team—in person, video conferencing, or phone. Each team member writes a summary of experience (expectations vary by age). Q&A features transcribed. Larger articles assigned to older team members. Volunteers work with writers to edit/finalize pieces.
- Publish on BPALL website; promote through email, Facebook, Twitter. Send interview subject a BPALL ball-cap as thanks.
